Become the Media: Community Based Journalism with Eric F. Coppolino
The media environment we grew up with no longer exists, though most people pretend that it does. We live in a time when all the major commercial outlets are controlled by hedge funds, the Pharma industry, or worse. The era of broadcast and ink is long since gone.
How do we conduct ourselves in this new digital environment? We need to become the media. This begins with understanding what journalism is and is not; and how to do it well. Many live with the idea that “the truth cannot be known,” which is a reflection of the chaos of our times. Journalism is the art of getting to the truth, and making it clear to readers what you have learned.
In this introductory discussion, we will go over the basics of what a news article needs in order to be credible. You know most of this; we will make it conscious and reduce it to a method. This naturally leads into how to research and construct a basic news article.
In one hour we have time for an introduction. At the option of participants, we can take this discussion online and get to work on the project of researching, fact-checking, and developing original news articles.

SARS-Crossed Lovers - Activist Theater with Sheila McCauley
Adapted from Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Sars-Crossed Lovers' is set in 2020 dystopian NYC, as Covid creates a fearful, dehumanized existence. The play was written to be performed as street theatre, with objectives quickly realized and fewer characters.
The play's theme is already universally understood: two lovers overcoming society's obstacles to find love. RomeNo and Julie, are the two protagonists from opposite sides of the political fence.
They both attend a masquerade ball, meant to glorify the covering of one's feelings, face and freedoms. Yet despite the reality of being shunned and shamed in a tense cultural climate, they find each other and fall in love. They plan their escape from the naysayers and the virus. The twist comes when these modern day lovers decide to fight for their love, right where they stand.
This is a time in history when the importance of theater has never been more palpable. A play seems like a good way to reach people without open confrontation. The characters are instantly recognizable to the audience and we experience the ultimate redemption and triumph of love overriding fear.
Love wins!
Sheila McCauley is an NYC based performing artist, writer and ESL teacher who has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions. She has studied Graham, Japanese dance and ballet and studied and performed at the Riverside Shakespeare Company in NYC. Off Grid Communications with Christian Sweningsen
Over the past two years we’ve acquired new friends and colleagues, and developed dear and fruitful relationships. We’ve learned a lot, in many new realms, but surprisingly much of this networking has taken place on cell phones and the internet - platforms founded on corporate and governmental domination and driven by automated surveillance.
At the same time, these same technologies are becoming increasingly vulnerable – to weather, to cyber-attacks, to failure due to neglected maintenance and to power failures.
We need to develop new networks that are not dependent on the Domination Infrastructure - and radio communications offer that. But it requires examining our expectations of ease: are we willing to commit to developing alternatives, finding “our people” and learning how to stay in touch so we can help our neighbors and colleagues?
This workshop explores inexpensive and easy-to-use two-way radios, along with the antennas and power sources that support them - all without the need for a ham radio license. We will provide detailed information on the purchase of radios, how to use them and how to develop communication networks.
Using real life scenarios, we’ll discuss how to develop community-based radio networks, including the future possibility of texting over airwaves.

Returning the Power to We The People with Bobbie Anne Cox, Esq
It has become clear that our government has lost sight of the fact that the United States is a Constitutional Republic, which means the Constitution is there to keep the GOVERNMENT in check... not to keep the citizens in check.Too many politicians (local, state, and federal) have forgotten the fact that THEY WORK FOR US. Not the other way around. We The People put these elected officials in those offices, and we can certainly replace them! They have overstepped, and their overreach has seeped into our private sector, to the severe detriment of We The People. So, we are taking back our state. And once we do, the rest of their house of cards will fall. New York is ground zero.
Join me for an instructional workshop on how you can get involved and take action to help return the power to We The People. There are even simple things you can do each day, right from the comfort of your own home. Don't miss this powerful workshop.
